Archimandrite Duane Pederson - Memory Eternal!

I want to note the passing of Archimandrite Duane Pederson, known as the father of Orthodox prison ministry in America and is remembered for his sacrificial love for the prisoners under his care. He reposed in the Lord on Wednesday at the age of 83.

Fr Duane was especially generous in his support of our prison ministry, a generosity we will never forget.
Memory Eternal! Memory Eternal! Memorial Eternal!

Metropolitan Joseph said it best:
"If you didn’t know Fr. Duane, you wouldn’t know the meaning of the priesthood. He may not have known most of the services, but he became like the prisoners he served. He served them and loved them to the best of his ability."
I love that statement, "he may not have known most of the services" - like me, there is no way you come to Orthodoxy in middle age and become a competent sacramentalist, but the priesthood is about far more than rubrics, and Fr Duane was a witness of that. I stand in the corner of the sanctuary, less competent than he, in his shadow as the Liturgy of Living continues, and that shadow will be sorely missed.
